Henry Hartshorne (1823-1897) was the son of Dr. Joseph and Anna (Bonsall) Hartshorne of Philadelphia. He graduated from Haverford School in 1839 and received his medical degree in 1845 from the University of Pennsylvania. He was an author of medical books and poetry. Hartshorne was editor of the Quaker periodical "Friends' Review" from 1881-1893. In 1893 he went to Japan to teach, where he died in 1897. His daughter was Anna Cope Hartshorne (1860-1957). Gibson succeeded Dr. Philip Physick as chair of surgery at the University of Pennsylvania in 1819. Between 1824 and 1850 he published 8 editions of his treatise, Institutes and practice of surgery.
